NEW RESORT IN CARLTON
Mr. John Fleming of Carlton has leased all the land west of the Little Thornapple, contained
in Mrs. Leavens farm for five years or more. He is going to make a resort of it, as it has
the only natural grove left along the Little Thornapple, most all second growth there very thick.
The river banks are higher on both sides. The water is very shallow in the summer time, making
it a safe place for the chldren. Mr. Fleming will open the resort this summer and will make no
changes the first season for the privilege of camping out on this land. This place can be reached
by autos or other rigs. It is only a few rods from a telephone, and can be served with mail,
including parcel post every morning. {NOTE: The 1895 Barry County Atlas shows that the Joseph Keeler farm
was in section 9 of Carlton Township. It was a mile north of Carlton Center, on the west side of the road}
